American Substance Abuse Professionals (ASAP) is proud to announce an exciting learning opportunity for drug and alcohol industry professionals. Three of our team members will be attending the Annual Substance Abuse Program Administrators Association (SAPAA) Conference in Dallas, TX.

SAPAA is a non-profit organization representing professionals within the alcohol and drug testing industry, including third-party administrators (TPAs), in-house administrators, Medical Review Officers (MROs), HHS Certified Laboratories, Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs), manufacturers of testing devices, collection sites, and employers.

Nicole Hanratty, ASAP’s COO and Chesapeake Chapter President of the Employee Assistance Professional Association (EAPA), and Sandra Serrano, ASAP’s CDO and member of the SAPAA Board of Directors, will be presenting at this year’s conference. Nicole has served as EAPA chapter president for four years and has held leadership roles since 2016. She is a Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP), DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional, NRC-qualified Substance Abuse Expert, and Certified Designated Employee Representative Trainer (C-DERT). With over 20 years at ASAP, she leads all ASAP Clinical and Operational Staff and specializes in risk mitigation and DOT regulations, supporting employers and SAPs with compliance and regulatory guidance.

Their session, Impairment Crisis: How Substance Use Impacts the Safety-Sensitive Industry, will explore new and alarming trends in the workplace. As substance use—both legal and illegal—continues to rise, workplaces are experiencing increased reasonable suspicion and post-accident incidents. Addressing this crisis in safety-sensitive industries requires:

  • Prevention
  • Education
  • Testing
  • Support

Nicole and Sandra will also highlight the importance of second-chance programs and how long-term support can motivate employees to successfully re-enter the workforce. They will share 2023 statistics, discuss the impact of medical marijuana on the workforce, managing reasonable suspicion events, and explore new developments in testing methods shaping the future of safety-sensitive regulations.

ASAP looks forward to another year of learning, growth, and collaboration to protect public safety.
