How to Prepare for a SAP Evaluation

When a Department of Transportation (DOT) regulated employee refuses a drug/alcohol test or failed a DOT drug test, they are required to complete the Return-to-Duty process before returning to safety-sensitive job duties. The first step in the process is to be evaluated by a qualified DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). If you find yourself in this position, how do you prepare as the employee? What happens during a SAP evaluation? 

Initially you will meet with a qualified DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for an evaluation and assessment. The qualified DOT SAP is a critical part to the SAP evaluation because they have extensive experience in substance use diagnosis and treatment, along with training on the Department of Transportation 49 CFR Part 40 and the Regulatory Agencies. Their job is to ensure you have the tools to safely return to work after a failed drug test. 

During the evaluation, the qualified DOT SAP will look over your case, have you complete one or more assessment tools and ask targeted questions to get more information. There is no need to feel nervous during the process. Answer the questions honestly, just like you would in a therapy session or a conversation with a friend. After your substance abuse evaluation, your Substance Abuse Professional will outline a plan for your Return-to-Duty process (RTD). This may include: 

• substance abuse awareness classes 

• individual counseling 

• or whatever level of care is appropriate for the individual case 

The SAP will refer you to places where you can complete the recommendations. Once you successfully complete the education and/or treatment recommendations given by your SAP, a final evaluation is conducted to assess your readiness for job re-entry.

How many SAP evaluations will I need? 

At minimum, you will complete two SAP evaluations. One will occur at the beginning, and one will occur at the end of your program with the same SAP. You can always check in if you have any questions along the way. 

What do I do between qualified DOT SAP evaluations? 

Between your SAP evaluations, you will need to complete the treatment and/or education recommendations outlined by your DOT SAP. Failure to comply will only delay your ability to return to work. You will not be permitted to do any safety-sensitive work in a DOT regulated field without completing the SAP portion of the RTD process. This is true even if you fail a DOT pre-employment drug or alcohol test or refuse to take a DOT drug test.
