When is a Substance Abuse Evaluation Required?
There are many situations that may require someone to have a substance abuse evaluation. In the workplace, an employee may be required to seek an evaluation after an accident, after testing positive on a drug or alcohol test, after a self-referral, or other reasons in accordance with state and federal regulations or a company’s written drug-free workplace policy.
An employee that performs Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated safety sensitive duties must comply with the drug and alcohol testing rules specified in 49 CFR Part 40. If there is a violation of the federal testing regulations that employee is required to complete the DOT Return to Duty process which includes being evaluated by a qualified DOT Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).
