Alcoholics Anonymous: Has It Lost It’s Place in Recovery?

In a New York Times Article entitled A Different Path to Fighting Addiction, a couple decide to go a different route to help resolve their son’s binge drinking issue from college. Turning away from the 12-step, no drinking at all philsophy that has made A.A. so notorious, this couple sought help from the Center for Motivation and Change in New York City. The CMC’s model is different from that of the A.A. model in that it focuses on solving emotional and behavioral problems.

It was the 2006 study, Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step Programmes for Alcohol Dependence, that has provoked new thought on how to handle addiction and has researchers revisiting the effectiveness of an intervention based program. More and more addiction centers such as CMC are looking for newer methods to prolong recovery.
