The 37th Great American Smokeout will be on Thursday, November 15th. The annual event sponsored by The American Cancer Society aims to encourage smokers to kick the habit. Nicotine in cigarettes is highly addictive. Smoking can lead to numerous health problems including cancer, heart disease and emphysema.
According to a study published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an estimated 68.2 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) users of a tobacco product in 2011. This figure represents 26.5% of the population in that age range.
Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US.
